Worst possible time for this fixture to happen, take an absolute hammering as we all expect and team confidence will go through the floor at a time when we are fighting for our championship lives. Our focus should be on nothing more than staying in this tin pot league.

The Gods appear to be conspiring against us folks!

Coil will be absolutely loving the build up to this game. With hordes of media descending on Brockhall and Ewood he won't pass up any opportunity to feed his ego by spouting his usual diatribe when there is a microphone in sight.

He will view this as a win/win situation for him. We are expected to lose anyway so defeat won't create too many ripples. Winning would send his gob into overdrive and he can dine out on that for the rest of his life. Just like one of his predecessors whose name escapes me at the moment.

But he hasn't though - he's been absolutely silent since Wednesday night after the Sheff Wed game.  Nothing on LET, nothing on Rovers website, no pre-match interview.   Usually I'd expect to see an article with a title along the lines of 'We Want to be Back Up With the Big Boys' OR 'United Provides Premier Test'   -- and then the same old shite about how this club deserves to play top flight football and that this season is about consolidation ahead of the big promotion push next year.

Alas, we've had nothing.......  Hear nothing today and I'll begin to wonder why he has fallen silent.

In the mean time - if ever we needed a guage of just how far we have fallen, how about this for small club mentality;

That cash windfall piece is an absolute disgrace.   £100m or more in debt,  literally forfeited our Premier League TV revenue, refusing to spend any money on the squad, adopting the managerial bargain bin approach and then telling us we're about to net £700,000 for playing against a side we used to play twice a year before these Shysters bought us.

As for the other piece  - Not so long ago Danny Graham wouldn't have been fit to lace  any of our strikers' boots  - now he's belittling the whole fan base telling us it's great to be playing United.   Do me a favour - it sounds like we support Sutton United, not a club that competed in 18 of the first 20 Premier League seasons (and won it) and were bloody comfortable doing so before these clowns walked in.

What a @#/?ing rag - supporting the continued dumbing down of our club.

EDIT - Just seen that our great leader featured in the 'It's great for the Fans' article - same drivel, different day;

Coyle admits heads were down after that defeat but the Rovers boss is hoping the United tie can provided a timely boost ahead of crucial Championship fixtures.

He said: “The cup game will bring with it a freshness and new energy.   “The heads were down that they didn’t get a minimum of a point.

“But they know that they went to a team like Sheffield Wednesday and showed that we are more than a match for them.

“What we have to do is make sure those little things we improve on, because if we do that then it will result in wins and taking us to where we want to be which is safety in the league."

Ewood doesn't look very full on the seat planner, aside from the Jack Walker (Will mean it might look better attended on tv....). The Riverside is near empty, Blackburn End sparse in the corners and unsurprisingly empty in the upper (only just been opened).

The fact we will get about 14,000 (estimate based on seat planner) fans in a 5th round cup game vs Man United says it all.

Considering we are supposed to have 10,000 fans on a normal matchday, think this game goes to show how many ST holders aren't bothering on Sunday as there will without doubt be plenty of floating/big game fans attending.

Another collapse in crowds is on the cards for next season.

I expect we'll be knocking on for 17,000 'home' fans putting the attendance at just shy of 25,000.

About 10,000 in the JW, 4,000 or so in the BBE and 2,000 or so in the Riverside.

Next season if things carry on as they are - relegation, Coyle stays, Venkys stay, more sales and no investment, then I can really see crowds hitting record lows for this club. If rumours are to be believed with some of the 7,000-8,000 crowds this season, I think we could be looking at potentially half that next season If we're struggling in Lge 1.

It will be interesting to see how the attendance compares with the 22,692 who were on for the United cup-tie in February 1985, the last time we were a recognised Second Division club playing against United.

Is more of an apt comparison not the sell out crowd for the Liverpool game from just two years ago? Also live on BT Sport, also £30

Or the League Cup Semi Final First Leg in January 2006 which only 24,000 turned up for at Ewood.

In fairness, that's when Utd were a twice-yearly fixture. Point taken nonetheless.

The '80s were a time of low home attendances. Less than 6,000 in '85

It won't be the slightest bit interesting whatsoever.

Off topic, but what will be interesting is, following the forthcoming divorce, which of the two vulgar partners who own this club will we be left with??

Can see 26.5 k on. 7.1 k from Man Utd.

Obviously a core amount will simply be coming for TV exposure and the last chance to partake in a protest like the red cards.

Ok a few prawn sarnie types but don't forget for some whom are older fans it may be there last chance to see a game like this, I think that blueeyedboy blogger seems a bit of an older fan so it will be those types wanting to come to see for the last time whilst they still can etc.

Agree though figures will tell us nothing.

If Venkys hold on to the club it won't just be older heads who might be taking a last chance to see a game like this. 23 years out of top flight was it last time ? Probably only 1 or 2 UTD cup ties in that time ?

Frightening stuff.

Aug 28 2004 26,155

Feb 1 2006  25,484 (Bentley hat trick 4-3 game)

Oct 4 2007 27,321

April 2 2012. 26,532

All Rovers v Man U league games. Not like it's sold out that frequently or tickets were at an absolute premium over the years

Again, taken from when they were a twice-yearly fixture. Personally think that any less than the 27k figure we got vs Liverpool is pretty poor, given it's:

A bigger team (the biggest English team worldwide), a bitter recent rival, and a good chance to win due to their European fixtures.

There's more closer games than that.. 1985 is basically a life time ago so doesn't compare PB

1985 is a good comparison.  We had been out of the top flight for twenty years and so top teams coming to Ewood was not an everyday event - rather like the present and foreseeable future.

I think you'll find, as Meadows as already pointed out, that many of us older fans don't need Manchester United to turn up to get us to support our team.  We are there every week irrespective of opposition or division we play in.
