Is this a role that is commonly found at football clubs? I've never come across this before.

TBF I think its fairly common. I believe at some point Johnson had the remit of Loans Manager under his technical stuff

I think it started when premier league teams like Chelsea and City would have full teams of people out on loan, for us it seems more of a made up jobs for the boys / appease the fans role

Most clubs have this role.  Last season Stuart Jones did it.  Rhodes is the ideal choice for the role.  As a young lad at Ipswich, he had a number of loans to other clubs as he was developing as a professional footballer.  He knows the problems youngsters would have going to other clubs on loan because he's been there and done it himself.  He's also had loans at the end of his career so knows the problems it can cause late in your career.  Thus he has the experience for the role and he has a knowledge of Blackburn Rovers.  For me this is an excellent appointment in so many ways.

It is a poor appointment in terms of:

Experience coaching.

Experience scouting.

Experience in football administration.

Experience as a leader.

Experience in literally any role outside of playing football.

Whilst it probably is a lower cost job for his mate, is not unusual to appoint a former player with not much experience of anything else.  Lescott started the same job at Man City the season after retiring as a player

But as pointed out - many of these roles, even in the prem, are taken up by “graduate” coaches / scouts. Carlton Cole and Johnny Evans for example.

He might be great at the role, and I’m concerned over absolutely nothing.

BUT

Carlton Cole had 4 years as a coach under his belt before being appointed to loan manager.

Edit - my mistake, 6 years as a coach.

Jonny Evans has been given the role just this summer with no coaching experience, like Rhodes has, and at a club almost as dysfunctional as ours. The one thing Evans does at least have is leadership experience, a captain for Leicester City, West Brom, and Northern Ireland.

From a non-emotional perspective, Rhodes has as much qualification for the role as I do. I would argue I have at least been in multiple roles where I am responsible for others and their development.

IMO, a total unnecessary appointment and one merely made to try and deflect current levels of justifiable criticism aimed at Gestede.  A former popular player with a friendly face will only cut it with the gullible and happy clappers!

We have just 3 players (Barrett, Duru and O'Riordan) out on loan one of whom is in USA!

Just why the feck do we need a loans manager!?

Think it's an absolute nonsense and a waste of money when we seem to be cutting costs in every other direction.

I'm calling this now - Jordan Rhodes will be the next Rovers manager. Exactly like Gestede effectively becoming CEO, he's a cheap option and no doubt will just say yes to whatever Pasha wants.

Could only happen at Rovers that we suddenly appoint a full time loans manager when we currently have barely anyone in or out on loan and the Head Coach himself has professed not to be a fan of the Loan System.

As for JR - loved him as a player here but the role he's going to be filling appears to be completely surplus to requirements currently.

Don’t take this personally Mike, you’ve never been in an academy, you’ve never done the YTS, you’ve never been on loan, or played at multiple levels of the EFL, you’ve never been transferred, you don’t have connections throughout the league through family, network and former employers and finally you’ve never had the responsibility of playing for championship level teams on a regular basis. All of those things make his experience a hell of a lot more important than your own and all of those things should be useful to a club that has an u21 / u18 setup absolutely chock full of players.
