What was it George Best said about Beckham?

"He can't kick a ball with his left foot, can't head the ball, can't tackle and doesn't score enough goals. Apart from that he's all right."

Spot on imo. Made the most of limited natural ability to become a tremendously effective player but a million miles away from being truly world class.

Edit: Gerrard's a bit the same. Fantastic player in his prime who on his day could influence and change the course of a game but nowhere near being one of the all time greats of the game.

Correct..... and Beckham was slow and couldn't dribble either. Big heart, big work rate and a great right foot got him there

Based on West Ham's recent form I wouldn't count on them even beating the likes of Newcastle at the moment.

I think Sam'll have them well up for this game. Mike Ashley sacked him remember Then it'll be off to Casa St James for a month or two. ^_^ (Whether Hull can beat MU is another matter).

Beckham, dead ball specialist, highly accurate. I'd call him world class. Where he messed up though was his guffaws, not covering other players, some of that, when he was sent off vs. Argentina in '98 I think.

He'd get goals in crucial situations.

So in your World team you'd drop Lionel Messie for Becks!

I agree, it would be nice to see the Magpies go down, it looks like they will survive but if they don't get someone competent, they will indeed be in this situation next year.

Pardew yes, has been an excellent manager in regards to other posts I have seen you comment on here but he definitely had some lulls there as well.

I wonder how Crystal Palace can keep Pardew if Pulis left because he did not have as much control as he wanted. Both seem about as competent, of course, everyone would have their opinion on that.

What a fantastic servant Steven Gerard has been to football and Liverpool FC.

Looking at his physique today Stevie G. looks like hes got a lot more years of football still to come from him.

Yes.... ^_^

Villa are 5 nil down after 40 mins to Southampton.

That's a bad loss. But before today, 5 wins out of 11 matches. Sherwood will be staying.

No doubting Sherwood has had a very good impact at Villa. But he needs to bring some better centre defenders.

Sherwood needs to adapt his tactics against teams with pace.

On QPR, It looks like Ramsey will be appoint QPR manager/head coach according to media reports.

No, he'd have played with him.

He could have laced his boots in the changing room more like.

But two attacking mids? You've fallen right into the perennial win nothing England manager trap who picked Gerrard and Lampard in the same team for a bloody decade simply because they were told to by a combination of press, media and all powerful sponsors.

You've lost me Gord. I think there's hardly a team/club in the world who wouldn't have taken Gerrard.

Scott Dann named Palace player of the year.

Yes, Scott 6ft standing, 5ft jumping Dann.

Scott Dann was by a country mile the best defender at the club, once he'd recovered from injury. He spent most of his time here covering Hanleys terrible positional sense and we should never have let him go.

Now he's on the brink of an England call up also.

Well apart from Chelsea sniffing around nobody did did they? I think we all know that when Real or Barca come a courting they always get their man.

btw my definition of world class is the team we would select if we were to play Mars.

So in every football generation (say 10 years) there are only ever 11 world class players? No wonder it's such a debatable subject. I guess if a couple of them get injured we'd have play with 9.

Palace are ripping Liverpool apart. Stevie Me's farewell not going according to plan

He wasn't my favourite player but after his childish comments about Chelsea fans last week he's gone further down in my estimations.

Gerrard was a top player in anyone's book and would have first pick in the great Liverpool sides of the 1970s and 80s too. Ferguson coveted him at ManU but knew Liverpool would never let him go to Old Trafford.
