JDT on the captain's armband: "Dom Hyam will take over as captain and Sam Szmodics as vice-captain. Two lads who have been playing at a high level and always put the team first."

Too much to read into this that Trav wasn't putting the team first anymore? Either way I don't think many would have put him in the team ahead of Wharton and Tronstad. Yes you need depth and back up, but Trav clearly didn't want to bide his time.

Shame JDT didn’t make Hyam captain in the first place. Would have let Trav focus on  his game and feel less of a burden on his shoulders

When was the last time Travis started a game in his preferred role as a holding midfielder?

Probably around the same time the people upstairs decided he was the next one up for the exit door as they wanted his wages off the books and to 'reinvest' it into a couple of unproven kids instead.

And as JDT points out these are 'club' decisions which basically means the owners' man decides, instructs Waggott and Broughton who in turn tell JDT what is happening with players.

Yeah but come on JH the player has a say too and there is no way Travis will have been happy sitting on the bench.Tronstad is a better defensive midfielder than him.Travis will have been angling for a move away and due to mismanagement we can't afford to have a 3rd,4th or 5th choice midfielder as one of our higher earners.

They just gave Szmodic and Wharton new deals and both would have had quite a jump in money. Both were in a great negotiating position, with Wharton the club's crown jewel and Szmodic one of the players of the championship so far this season.

Would have been a bold move to take the captaincy off trav and give it to a new signing in his first summer. If you mean last summer, that would probably have put Trav's nose out of joint even more. He already wanted to go, it hardly convinces him to stay if the armband is taken off him.

If Tronstadt and Wharton are so much better, why are we in such a shit run of form and look wide open a lot of the time?

I've said for a few weeks that Travis reading of the game is better than those two. There's more to playing midfield than being able to 'take a ball on the half turn'.

Travis wasn't a major issue for our 'style of football' last year. It was our lack of goals towards the end of the season which cost us.

Tronstad is better at winning the ball back and protecting the defence imo, most our goals come from being wide open on the wings, commiting all our players forward. Trav tries to be box to box but only effective 1 in 10..

Wild that we can't afford to have a squad though.. too expensive to sit on the bench by the sounds of it.

Every first teamer that can’t get in the side gets loaned out. ‘Competition for places’ is the norm at most clubs, but that’s a financial luxury we can’t afford here - as shown by the fact we are spending months with one left back and one right back.

Let's be clear here. None of us know the true scenario across all the goings on at Ewood, though there are clear financial difficulties that will obviously have a factor in all footballing and non-footballing operations.

In that context, JDT is responsible for the footballing side of things, which has been decent overall IMO in his 18 months here but clearly struggled in the last month, predictably so given the lack of squad depth. He plays a style mostly unsuited to Travis' abilities, hence his lack of selection. I like Travis, but if JDT doesn't & Travis doesn't want to play backup to Tronstad (& Garrett, who I think is potentially better than Travis long term) & is playing up about it, then him leaving makes some sense. JDT stands or falls by that decision.

The key is to replace him with someone JDT does like / will select / can play his system (clearly not Ayeri). Time will tell on that front; hopefully someone is lined up by GB who JDT thinks can properly compete with Tronstad, otherwise this could prove to be a pretty rash decision (I know, been there, done that).

On Ayeri, let the guy show what he can do before criticising. His signing is clearly a  separate process from Travis leaving, in a pure footballing context

It's the 5th of Jan, 4 weeks of this rollercoaster won't be good for the heart!!

That's because Garrett is, and the next in line from the academy replaces Garrett's position in the squad.

Depressingly, I find myself hoping that's true.

The LT said we are looking at bringing in 3 new faces this summer.

We are trying to sign O'Riordan, essentially to fill a squad gap to be left by Hill (but with less perceived quality judging by the claim he is seen as a squad body at first).

We have signed this new guy Ayari, who has just had an unsuccessful loan in this division and doesn't seem to play in a priority position for us. He apparently isn't here to replace Travis and seems a very different player to him.

If the third signing would just be to replace Travis, we would have a net gain of one young player in an area we didn't massively need, who has played at but not impressed at this level. And that's assuming O'Riordan and a Travis replacement were as good as the players they replaced, which, ya know...

Any chance you can post the content of the article? Paywalled for me.

It's not paywalled as such, you can just only view LT articles so many times before you're paywalled. Try viewing it on a different browser or incognito mode though and you should be able to read it.

He tells it at face value, but it just feels like such a weird thing for our social media team to be sending out.

It all seems so disjointed, we'll never get a decent bid for him in the future after saying that.

JDT is 5 star at media and pr, it’s always someone else’s fault or issue.

He wants experience but won’t play and then sells our captain and most experienced player. Same with Kaminski last season who he dropped for Pears.

We are going to end up with a team of kids and weak loan players before crashing into league 1.

Then he leaves and it was all for nothing whilst chasing his dream of playing with ‘style’.
