Would be fantastic if he was a couple of years younger. Easily going to be the most experienced player in our squad, but at 33 his pace is a concern. If anything, at least Warnock was pretty good in this department.

oh and when is our central midfielder coming finally?

He's not! Well you gotta see the funny side!

Sam seems to think that he will be a big influence off the park as well as on it. Now that Tugay has gone, maybe we need someone to fill that role? I trust Sam's judgement on this - he seems more enthusiastic about this signing than any other we've been linked with.

The central midfielder is due in 2012 I believe.

It is very good business. Even if we can use him for only 1-2 seasons before he gets too old, we got him for free so nothing lost.

Plus, he's been a regular Spanish international and spent the last 10 seasons as a top defender at Real Madrid. Must be one of the most high-profile names to ever to come to Ewood actually. We didn't get Ruud but we got Selgado - not bad at all.

Can't wait to see him in a Rovers shirt.

It sounds like if Salgado does come he'll be used as a defensive midfielder rather than right back, which could mean an exit for Grella. It will be interesting to see how Sam will line up his team when (and if) everyone's fit. We have to be relatively pleased with the depth of our squad now. The only position we're really lacking in is that creative/attacking midfielder one...

I have to say that I thought Gallagher looked quite good against City for the short time he was on. I would like to see him given a chance in that role for a game or two at least.

EDIT: Oh and I'm quite excited about the prospect of this signing. I always loved Salgado, so if he can do a good job for us I will be very happy.

We should look at the positives, if/when we sign Salgado. He will certainly raise the profile of the club. He will no doubt have a positive attitute, and will be out to prove he still has something to offer. It might not be the creative midfielder we want, but as a fan to see an ex Real Madrid legend in a Rovers shirt will be brilliant. If Warnock doesnt leave, and Dunn returns then i can see Salgado in midfield with Givet at centre half.

Robinson

Jacobsen Givet Samba Warnock

Salgado

Diouf Dunn Pedersen

Benni/Di Santo Kalinic

Granted I can only say what I saw in the couple of pre season games I watched him in but he was up and down the pitch like a younger player. This could have been because he was giving everything trying to get a new contract from them but he didnt look like he was getting on to me.

Unless he is going to play a role in midfield i really don't see the point of this transfer. We already have Jacobsen and Emerton who can both play at right back, personally I’d like to see Emerton given a chance in central midfield as he has the energy and drive to play there but thats not to say if Jacobsen is out injured or suspended that he can't do a decent enough job at right back. Andrews is also a backup option as well for that right back position and Reidy can play there as well if needed.

If this is our last piece of activity this window and Salgado is being brought in purely as a right back then i am disappointed as clearly we haven't solved our main weakness.

Yes we have Jacobsen who is our specialist RB as you say Emo will probably be pencilled in for Midfield probably CM as he has the energy and drive for that position. Andrews now tell me you are joking he can't even play in his own specialist position CM at RB he is too much of a liability gets caught out far too many times. Reidy we will be lucky if he stays the distance also let me cast your mind back Genclerbilgia whose mistake cost us that game he can hardly be relied upon to do the required job there. As they say Rome was not built in a day I am sure if need be if the midfield struggle Big Sam will bring in a Midfielder. Salgado would be a fine addition as he is the sort out player our youngsters will look up to and improve. He would be a good idea also as we might not get many years out of him would be a good addition to the coaching set-up here in the future.

I feel very excited by this signing. There is nothing like having a seriously class act at the club and we had been missing that since Tugay's retirement.

The reality now is we have serious competition for places all over the pitch and we have a squad with some real depth.

First 20: Robinson, Brown, Jacobsen, Nelsen, Samba, Zura, Givet, Warnock, Emerton, Nzonzi, Salgado, Grella, Reid, Dunn, MGP, Diouf, Benni, Jason, Di Santo, Kalinic.

You can perm any eleven plus seven from that list and know that there is assured Premier League quality.

Pushing for inclusion: Gallagher, Hoilett, Van Heerden, Olsson, Doran, Fielding and whoever is left from the youngsters not out on loan

And if we are desperate: Andrews

By my reckoning, we have nine senior players, four not established players plus Andrews vying for midfield starts. Even with the risk of four injured players not making it back to full performance, Sam is not exactly stuck is he?

How ironic that a Burnley fan craves so much respect and following. Says a lot for Nicko that he bridges the divide so well, and gives us the scoops ahead of time. I hope all is as well as can be expected at this time Nicko.

Nicko's a long time Rovers fan although won't admit it on here. He affiliation to Bunleigh is because Coyley is a mate.

True, but I believe Reid, Andrews, and Gallagher are all expendable. I dont think I am being harsh on Reid. He can only play central midfield with reasonable quality at this level and he failed to do so after his last injury. Cant see how things will be any better this time around. Harsh but realistic. I rated him so highly before his first injury. I cant see him being the same.

If true Salgado is a very nice addition indeed. Delighted with this.

A back four of Salgado-Samba-Givet-Warnock is very solid roll on saturday!

I wonder if the boards sudden change of heart has anything to do with appeasing the fans, if Warnock does a bolt in the next couple of weeks????????

Just need to wait until next year to get a decent centre midfielder. To be honest with the amount of wages coming of the books next year it may be a better time to address this.

Warnock is a defensive liability. £5m and he's a goner!

Not buying a midfield player means there's going to be a heavy reliance on keeping Dunny, Reidy and Grella fit. If those three are out for long periods of time then i can see us struggle.

I see the weakest area of our squad the midfield, so if there was just one more signing between now and the close of the transfer window it should be a midfielder, not another right back.

`The role i would give warnock when nelsen is back and givet shifts to left back back is attacking midfield role`

that`s the only role i`d give to warnock because he`s a poor defender, givet is our left back and olsson is back up. warnock is now a midfielder for us and only a back up one at that when all are fit. villa stump up 7m and he`s a gonner.

Sorry - didn't see that - my thoughts too.

Selgado is triple purpose though. He can play left back, right back or Centre Midfield.

Even if Dunn, Reid & Grella can only manage 15 games each then that means we should hopefully always have 1 of them around + Emerton, NZonzi, Andrews, Gamst, Diouf, Selgado, Warnock, Doran, Van Herden, Hoilett.

Salgado should play right back. He's still got legs and knows the role like the back of his hand. Emerton then goes into midfield with Jacobsen as back-up as I'm not convinced on him.

Salgado could play the holding role?, we'll see as I can't remember him playing there once.

I think Jacobsen played a very good match on Saturday and would continue with him even if Salgado is available.

I will be gutted if we sell warnock. He is the one out on that field which shows "arte et labore" most of all.

He also offers a lot more than Givet going forward. For those of you who say that Warnock played without passion and looked like he was off to Villa already - we cant have seen the same game.

My thoughts exactly, has anyone actually seen him play there ever and are we just basing it on what Sam may or may not have said?

I have seen Salgado play twice in pre season for Real and he still had the pace, no doubt about that ^_^
