Heard a tail about Scholes the other day. Training at man ure Ronaldo had done a load of fancy moves other players couldn't do. Scholes says to him see that tree 50 metres away I can hit it in one can you?. Put the ball down and played a 50 metres pass straight onto the tree . Ronaldo couldn't get near it despite numerous attempts.

If Scholes was called scholesinho he would get loads of plaudits but because he's English he's underrated

Underrated? No chance. One of the most overrated players from the Fergie-Era for me. Lampard, Gerrard and maybe even Carrick above Scholes in midfield IMO.

Thats absolute nonsense. A very good player but equally not remotely underrated, he has always had loads of plaudits. Former players, pundits, fans.

Not a good example of the no one rates the English mindset.

I've read loads of posts on Facebook and YouTube saying Scholes is hugely overrated.  He can't tackle he can't head the ball etc

Lampard was overrated.  He scored 20 goals a season but he didn't really have many other facets to his game. Gerrard was a good club player but at international level he was found wanting

He couldnt do those things but he was a highly intelligent and gifted footballer and one who is respected both in this country and by foreign players.

Regularly see those quotes from big names (Zidane, Xavi etc) constantly recycled saying how they wished they had played with him. Or talk of how he was wasted for England, often with the myth that he retired because he was played on the left which was obviously a poor decision but he has said certainly not the reason.

Certainly dont think its an anti English thing either way.

It seemed more common in those days to discover an unearthed gem (Kinkladze & Pahars spring to mind as other examples).  I am not sure if it played a part in him moving to Rangers, but Souness was Tugays manager at Galatasaray in the mid 90s, so it wouldn't surprise me if he played some part in Tugay moving to the UK, and was obviously a huge part in why he ended up at Rovers after his stay in Scotland

I would hazard a guess that it was a "perfect storm" of events as to how and why he ended up at Rovers, and if it was in the current era, he would have been at one of the top 8 or 10 clubs in Europe

If I remember correctly, Tugay wasn't always a regular in the Rangers team at the time. We were able to sign him for that reason. Similar, I believe, to how we got Eyal Berkovic on loan from Celtic, who was the prequel to Tugay. Souness didn't take up a permanent deal for Berkovic, who played a part in our promotion, and then Tugay came in.

Back to Tugay, Souness has said he took Tugay to Rangers then to Rovers because he rated him as the equivalent of Zico and Alan Ball - players whom in his prime Souness couldn't get close to.

And yes I do think Adam has the potential to be an all time great. His shimmies and passes catch the eye but his ball winning tackling stats for Palace last season were so good as to be almost surreal.

Bask to the last 15 minutes v Chelsea, Chelsea were so dominant because they were mostly playing it around Adam, not trying to go through his territory....

theres one thing lacking from his game that could hold him back, his workrate. He isn’t the modern all action midfielder that runs and tackles for the full 90. He isn’t one who’s going to dictate the possession for you or put opposition players under constant pressure. He’s the one with the silky skills that used behind the top strikers in the world can be devastating. If he did combine that workrate with his obvious exceptional talent he would be one of the best in the world. I don’t think he will.

Busquets like? I agree and, perhaps, therefore, the Spanish league would be ideal.

Watching Palace highlights against Chelsea, Wharton seemed to be getting forward and even running a little with the ball. Possibly a sign of what Palace want from him.

On paper, Wharton’s only shortfall is the lack of goals and assists - the kind of numbers that inflate transfer fees to dizzying height (that I hope a large figure will come our way). But on the pitch, Palace and any club with sense will gladly take his class and composure over flashy figures because he will only get better with more experience in the Premier League, Europe, and hopefully England (if TT actually calls him up!).

Don’t know that I agree with the lack of assists. It’s not always the final pass/cross that makes a goal but that’s who gets the credit for the ‘assist’
