The entire defence needs to go. Maybe keep Nyambe, and see if Mulgrew can be converted into a substitute CM for his set-pieces. But if the others remain part of our first team we are going nowhere next season, that much is stone cold guaranteed.

Not sure we need a whole new team for a promotion push. Sheff Utd players are by and large bang average but a good game plan, round pegs in round holes and the right attitude can go a long way. That said there are 4 glaring areas of the squad I think need strengthening (a tough CB, quality cover for Dack & Graham and a wide left player.) And that's before any outgoing players...

You missed out the most important component - a good manager who makes the team better than the sum of its parts. Wilder is very good at that.

Aye, realistically if we're going to have a chance of promotion with Mowbray as manager than it's inevitable we will need better players across the pitch. The man himself has said so. The only other option is to get another manager, but that doesn't seem to be many people's preference, so we'll be waiting on Venky's benevolence to see whether we're in with a shot of a playoff place next season or not (no way we'll be good enough to go up automatically).

Personally I'm expecting a relegation struggle next season, as I believe Dack will go and we will seriously struggle to replace his contributions. Graham and Mulgrew will be another year older, and both are already showing signs of being on the wane, although Mulgrew far more than DG.

I would obviously love Tony to prove me wrong, but his recruitment over the past couple of years doesn't give me much cause for optimism.

I just see more of what we have seen this season with the odd off the wall experimental failure thrown in for good measure

I think this is why I have so little faith in him. It's ok saying we will stabilise this season and push on next season for the top 6 (which a lot of fans, and Mowbray have been suggesting) but progress is not always a given. His recruitment, to be blunt, has been shit. Dack is the exception,  but even the likes of Reed have gone progressively worse the more time he spends out of position on the right of midfield. He doesn't look particularly good when he's moved in-field either.

The squad needs a massive overhaul and with Mowbray's success rate there is a chance that we will actually go backwards next season if he has to bring 5 or 6 1st teamers in.

IMO we need a Keeper, a  LB, a CB, a LM as an absolute bare minimum.... and then probably a new striker, a winger and a CM. Those players have to be better than what we have.

Out of all the players we've got I'd trust  Travis, Lenihan, Graham and Dack to be consistently good enough to take us forward. I'd add Nyambe, Bennett, Raya, AA, Chapman, Evans, Smallwood as good enough to have in the squad based on the fact you cant change everyone.

Mulgrew, Rodwell, Bell and Williams have become liabilities in the 2nd worse away defence out of 92. Raya gets a pass as he has the raw ingredients to improve in a position that is notoriously difficult when you're young.

I'd try for Nick Pope on loan or perm and Sammy ameobi

Nick pope has been linked with Arsenal, no chance we’d be able too get him. I do think we need to look at bringing in an experienced keeper though too try and get a bit more out of Raya, and someone who could step in when needed. Not sure about Ameobi, i’d prefer Jon Taylor from Rotherham.

I'm surprised you mention Lenihan as someone who you see as consistently good enough to take us forward. For the most part this season, he has been poor, obviously I would like him around but I'm unconvinced he can be considered someone trustworthy enough to take us forward.

With Rodwell, the question has to be whether he can contribute going forward as a midfielder, and whether Mowbray can see past his defensive experiment which for me has failed.

I know we differ on our opinion on Bennett in the main but I would agree that he cant be anything more than a squad player, but unfortunately he is the first name on the teamsheet. Only the last 10 minute removal against Millwall at home and coming on 10 minutes into the second half away at Derby has he not played the full 90 minutes when fit. Even when we are chasing a goal, he is never sacrificed for a more attacking player. Yesterday he didnt have a single shot and put in a solitary cross according to Rich Sharpe.

We definitely need a new right back to provide an alternative to Nyambe, and for me 2 centre backs rather than 1.

I share this fear too. Plus we lose Reed and will likely need to rely on Brereton.

This why I was so annoyed on January when were were in spitting distance of sixth and needed to strengthen not back off. You don’t get to choose when you challenge for promotion unless you have the division’s highest budget - and even then there are no guarantees.

Instead: “who needs Assombalonga when you’ve got Brereton?”

Bennett is 4th on our combined goals and assists table since Mowbray took over. Obviously playing all the time helps, but he hasn't always being played in an attacking role.

Lenihan is out only CB worthy of the name. He's been a lot better than poor. You've said many times Mulgrew is our best CB which is blatantly untrue. Lenihan will only get better. Wilder wanted him at Sheff Utd which tells you everything you need to know. Lenihan is a good Champiobship CB.

If there's a decent budget, for example something similar to summer, circa £10.5 mil, and the additional £4m we were going to spend on the midfielder. Then spend it on two centre halves and a proper defensive midfielder. Then get a striker in on loan. Cash in on dack for circa £15mil and spend it on benhrama from Brentford and freeman from qpr.

The absolute bare minimum priorities in the summer are a commanding specialist centre back, a top class central midfielder and a top striker to replace Graham. That won't be cheap in itself as top strikers at this level have gone for £10m plus.

If we can land Reed for CM that would help but if we lose him and Rodwell then the squad suddenly starts looking even worse on quality than it is now. For me if we lose Dack as well we might as well give up now and Im not sure why TM has suddenly started floating the idea of selling Dack because if there is money available like he says (and I was told) then that shouldnt be necessary.

That's the bare minimum required and ideally we obviously need pace and ingenuity on either flank as well so instead of wasting the rest of this season with the same tired old faces TM should be trying to integrate Rothwell and Chapman into the starting eleven to see if they can save us some money in the summer.

Big clear out of the old guard also needed.  Williams, Mulgrew, Evans, Conway, Bennett and Graham need to go for me.

I don't really trust TM to do any of this, I don't think he'll be able to bring himself to be ruthless enough with many or any of his favourites and I fear we'll start off with the right sort of soundbites but as the summer goes on and nothing much is happening we'll start hearing the same sort of excuses about players' demands being excessive that we did last summer.

Surely left back is as urgent a priority as anything? Even the best 2 centre backs would struggle if the full back is constantly allowing the ball to come into the area.

I also don't think that defensive midfield is anywhere near a priority for the summer. Travis is blossoming in there, and compliments Evans nicely, Smallwood should be very much a squad player, but also for me Rodwell could be the answer. Him and Travis would be worth a shot together, one thing is for sure, he is not a centre back but could add the ability to keep the ball.

Doubt there would be any chance of signing them 2 for £15m, nor do I see why they would come here, but we need to keep Dack for as long as possible.

I would now agree that he is our best centre back, but he is often rash and makes poor decisions. Mulgrew was at one stage IMO our best centre back but unfortunately it seems that age has really caught up with him, although having a similar player next to him doesnt help. Lenihan does have the most raw materials to become a good centre back, but I wouldnt hang my hat on him yet.

Graham is now on 12 goals and 4 assists. Even if he hadn't contributed anything else, which everyone but yourself agrees that he has contributed plenty as a focal point in attack. Surely he deserves to still be around just for that level of goal contribution?

Evans has had a good season too, no way should he be let go.

Mulgrew and Bennett should be no more than squad players, and Conway and Williams can certainly go along with Bell and a few others.

Any players we sign this summer need to be LEADERS.

We have very few (if any) players in the team at the moment who seems capable of screaming and shouting at team-mates.  Stupid mistakes such as Bell's away to Reading and Mulgrew yesterday are too often met with a shrug of the shoulders instead of the rip-roaring bollocking they deserve.

The Champions of 1995 was stuffed with leaders - most of them feisty, difficult characters who would argue amongst themselves but cared passionately about winning.

Mowbray by common consent is a "nice" guy. He needs to sign some not-so-nice players

At the very most, Graham should be an option for half an hour off the bench or the occasional start in case of injuries next season . He should be able to cope with and play  at 100% doing that.

Evans is a shocking player in my book, not that much of an upgrade on Lowe.

You might be able to make a case for giving Mulgrew another 12 months as back up, however there's no value at all in keeping Bennett around, he's simply not good enough either.

I agree with that. Huge lack of leadership. Remember when we had around 4-6 players starting under Hughes who were captains of their respective countries

Since Mowbray came in, I think he's spent about 300K on the defence (Bell and Downing). One of those is out on loan to a League One club, and the other SHOULD be the one that is out on loan to a League One club.

If we are going to make a serious challenge for promotion next season, we need investment all over the park. Out of our whole group (that we own), I honestly think only Dack and Nyambe are good enough to be in a promotion-challenging side. The rest are OK for mid-table, and have served a purpose for this season, but next season needs to be a different script. I just think that the window will go the same way as most of them have under Mowbray - fairly uninspiring and fruitless - "helping the group". If this new recruitment system really was firing on all cylinders in January, then we're going nowhere next season, apart from further down the table. I want to see first-teamers in summer, but I really wonder what Venkys will make of their £7m investment, and if any funds will be made available at all unless Dack, Lenihan or Nyambe are sold.

Good post. I'd add Raya Travis and Reed (if he signs) to the players who are good enough going forward and if they were ever given a chance you'd hope Rothwell and Chapman would stake a claim as well.

It really doesn't help that the players who imo need clearing out were nearly all given new deals. The owners must be looking at that and the £7m spent on Brereton and wondering what's going on.

A rare breed now though it took Bowyers years to realise after he spent several seasons signing nice lads. Academy system drives it out of them imo, robots in place of characters, flair and mavericks.

That's why I like Dack even though he's frustrating and you think what a player he could be if he ignored distractions and just lived the athletes life but then again would he be the same ?

Anyway that's by the by I agree some real leaders and physical presence needed down the spine of this team although overall you can rarely fault the workrate of most of them.

Or the 2001 promotion team.

Friedel, Berg, Short, Flitcroft, Hughes.

‘Captain’s’ throughout.

Not the point you are making but Berkovic, Duff, Dunn and Jansen helped too!

Perfect blend of youth and experience - quality throughout too.

And a manager who demanded from the players.
