Might have🤷🏻‍♂️, I thought you were saying that 2 in midfield, in a 4-4-2 doesn't work any more due to lack of numbers in the middle.   Yet playing 2 in the middle a fraction deeper is fine?

I'd still argue its down to the type and quality of player that's in there.

Partner any of either Wharton, Buckley, Morton with an Nzonzi or Flitcroft  and there is no way the midfield 2 gets overwhelmed every week.  We just don't have the right compliment of players in the middle.

Recruit players to make a system work.   We don't - or certainly haven't previously- done that.

Ah I see what you mean! I suppose the counter argument is if 442 is viable why does virtually no one play it?

I genuinely have no idea 😂

It's like inverted wingers cutting in every time and running into a back 4/5 because the full backs just drop in the box and block/congest  the space.

Lots of people, far cleverer than me think its a great idea. I just wish somebody would explain why🤪

Is this actually true?   He scored 12 goals in 47 games that season, an absolute glut by his standards, but I don't remember many of them.  One lovely half volley in to the Darwen End sticks out in my mind... be interesting to know how many of those goals were actually headers.  I was working away at the time but I remember Gally starting in that 1-0 win to Wigan when Emnes scored the fantastic goal - he was absolutely hopeless in every way he still is now, particularly back to goal.  Graham came on after 65mins and showed him exactly how to play that role - he was fantastic.  Why Gally ever started ahead of him I don't know.

With Gallagher, I honestly can't remember Rovers having a striker that has such poor anticipation - he just doesn't appear to have any ability to see a picture unfold at all.  Strikers should always be a step ahead of their defenders.... he just looks like he plays the game as it's happening.

It's alright having someone who can deliver crosses, but I'm not convinced Gally has the nous or wherewithal to take advantage of it.  He must be a piece of piss to mark.

We've taken him on because e he's good at set-pieces?!! C'mn!

We need a more grown-up discussion than that.

Is he fitting into our existing set-up or is he the first in a series of signings where  we change our approach? That's critical.

Hedges was a winger at Aberdeen, his strength was his crossing and he had a good shot on him when he cut inside.

We don't see that side of him much because he was shoe-horned into an existing structure. Khadra was an exciting and talented young player who could look a champion , but in our set-up he too often  ran in to blind allies. As does Dolan for that matter.

Unless a winger has the right players in the middle to take advantage of his pace/skills we won't get the best out of them. That particularly affects set-pieces.

We play sterile football, we score few goals because we create few chances.

So, until I see the totality of this transfer window I worry about the prospects for this sort of player. There are other  players we need more. I hope there is a plan but, with a week to go, I fear that's its the same old.

I hope that's a better post than "Give the lad a chance FFS".

No it isn't. It's just longer.

In that Gallagher video, 90% of the goals are exactly between the 6 yard box and penalty spot. The others are him running direct through the middle.

Absolutely infuriating we've had 3+ years of him on the wing since. Bad mis-management.

I think it is pretty good mis-management.

Done.

You're not the only one - it's like being in a school playground when he's on here

He looks a totally different player there.

..... because it shows all his best moments and cuts out the rubbish. Hardly surprising

I remember that full back we signed from Berlin a while back - looked great on U-Tube but turned out to be useless

Let's hope this new lad Thomas isn't the same.

At this time Gally hasn't got many, best moments.

We ruined Ryan Giles who I was made up with when we signed him. Let's hope he fairs better.

If he plays in his position; then JDT will already be one up in that regard. Straw that broke the camels back was turning up to Coventry and seeing Ryan Giles playing as a striker.

Wasn't at that game but was he worse than Bradley Johnson as the false nine?

Nail firmly on the head there.

Pay 5 million for a striker and make him one of the highest paid then try and turn him into a hod carrier in wide positions.

Madness for a club like us.

Just noticed that 😂.  There only seemed to be one place left 😬

The Comms / PR / Marketing team (whatever they're called at Rovers) will have no idea who's coming in. They'll know about an hour beforehand when someone from the operations side says "get down to Brockhall and photograph this new signing".

#thankyouMowbray

Spent £5m on a striker who he then put out wide cos he realised he had the first touch of a cart horse - and then extended his contract when our wage bill is clearly ridiculously tight.

The gift that keeps on giving.

No it wasnt, it was intended so that he could beat the full back in the air as they are generally worse in the air than centre back. Playing him wide showed up how bad his first touch could actually be.

Still maintain though play him down the middle with players who have the ability to cross he will get goals. He tends to struggle when he has time to think.

Don't know why so many rate Giles so highly on here. Looked the same player for Boro as he did for us when we faced them a little while back.

It's good to have a set piece specialist but we need a lot more than that to improve our overall play.

Yet JDT carries on with it…
