Stokes was trying to be positive and turn the tide. Can't just block after block.

The finest innings I’ll ever see was at this ground and by Stokes in the ashes. End of day 3 he needed to dig in and ended 2* off about 50. Day 4 wickets tumbling all around him and he was still digging in and got to his 50 off 150. One wicket left he was on 60 off 177 and by the end 135* off 219, scoring 75 in a 76 partnership.

He can play both ways and then played as the situation demanded but at the moment for some reason he chooses not to engage his brain currently and just goes into flail mode straight out of the gate.

Still hold this opinion?

Both players playing the natural game and being positive against their spinner Bracewell

Absolutely. The foundations to this new style are built on sand. It will end in far more defeats with their ability than wins. Positive cricket doesn’t only have to be clearing the ropes all the time but it’s how these lads are defining it

That was second innings tho.

New Zealand were on top and We couldn't just them bowled at them. We need to attack them and change the tide.

2 games so far 2 wins. Second test was a very enjoyable win by England.

Bairstow and Overton were positive but not reckless today. Played every ball on merit

Really poor from England today - gave New Zealand at least 50 too many runs with their moronic bowling before lunch and now you'd think they'd never seen a ball swing with how they're batting this afternoon.

Test over. As Boycott used to say 'you can't win a Test in a session, but you can certainly lose it.' This is a textbook example - 4 down for nothing with an extremely long tail chasing 300+.

Boycott has a history of talking out of his arse. If you can lose a test in a session it stands to reason that you can bloody win one in a session, given there are only ever two teams playing in a test.

Rob Jones lost us that. All he needed to do was get off strike. The last three overs he took the strike off the last ball. What was he thinking? Left Tim David a spectator.

I can’t take to that lad at all. He never looks confident.

Vilas lost control in the middle overs - we were strangling them in the power play, then started leaking 10+ run overs. They scored about 50 more than I expected them to.

He's a poor short overs captain imo.

Jones has a T20 average of almost 40 yet whenever I see him he bats like it's a 4 day game.

He most certainly cost that game.

David should have refused some of those singles and told Jones to leave it to him.

The defeat was not down to Vilas, unless he put Jones in the mid order.

A lesson in how to chuck a game away.

Derbyshire did take some decent catches.

Overton deserved a hundred and I was gutted he didn't get it.

Its going to very interesting test match now to see what target they set us

He just couldn’t get going today Overton, that wicket was coming, but a great knock chaddy, he’s brought us back into the game.

Bairstow superb also and Broads knock was worth the admission fee.

Off to Leeds shortly, weather looks good for the day which is a bonus.

Been a great series, thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish and isn't it great to see these players playing with a smile on the face, the mcCullum factor.

Come on England.

Have a good day Gav. Broad said this morning that whatever target England are set, they will go for it. Need to get those wickets first.

Enjoy that @Gav? Pope is starting to show his class now, but Joe Root is just a fabulous cricketer isn’t he!

Brilliant, everything comes off the middle of the bat, one of Englands all time greats.

Free admission tomorrow, direct service from Preston 🤔

I think it helps when your opponents play the right way also.

Well England didn't lose the test like you were saying.

I would say one thing never write off this England test under McCullum and Stokes cos they will always go for a win and play positive

England are believing their own hype and defining positive cricket as slogging/reckless cricket. As exciting as the Trent bridge finale was it was a freak occurrence victory thanks to once in lifetime Barstow innings. The Stokes era won't survive long unless they learn to how to play proper test cricket.

Positive cricket is also when we are bowling. Like when Stokes refused to back mid off back to Long off on Leach's request. Instead he keep him up and the batsman try to go over of mid off and was caught by the fielder at Mid off.

Another good win for England and an excellent start for McCallum. NZ clearly off the boil and not the team they were though and it's best to reserve judgment as the team still has many weaknesses, not least Crawley who I'd want and expect to be replaced for the next series.

The next test starts on Friday against India.

England have named the same squad back added James Anderson and Sam Billings. So it looks like Brendan McCullum and Ben Stokes will back him
