Steele has gone. History so leave it and move on. More important issues for Rovers starting tomorrow

Steele always capable of the odd worldie save but it's the basics he struggles with at times. The regular bad goals he let in were usually followed by a string of good saves.

He is what he is but i'm truly amazed he's gone from no 2 to a rookie at a relegated club to no 1 at a place like Sunderland a division up just like I was amazed he ended up going from no 3 at an average Boro side to no 1 at supposedly play off chasing Rovers to replace a guy like Robinson.

Bloody good agent that lad has.

It's allot more than two players, eleven players it's a squad game (25) and we look woefully short of anywhere acceptable depth wise.

Meanwhile Grigg and Toney looks 40 goals who both look fit, we've Graham aged 32 who's going to struggle 2x99 mins every week with a condemned hip. Wigan then have depth of Massey whom at the moment is on par with Samuel, so it's likely they've far more goals.

In behind they've ex man Utd player and talented lazy git Nick Powell, the most talented and technical player in this league, again if you score3/4 at Barnsley like last year chances are he will murder this league, on our hands we have Bradley Dack from a tough season at gills last year, anyone normal would prefer Powell.

In centre midfield they've Sam Morsy who's a star, a proper box to box player, we've got Smallwood, you'd have an Egypt international who played regularly and wanted by sides in the championship over Smallwood. Alongside you've got McDonald dictating play, we've a 33 year old Whittingham, on paper Whitts should win. Alex Gilbey another standout in L1 previously for Colchester providing depth, who've we got Tomlinson? No contest Gilbey every time. Max Power , jack Byrne and David Perkins also trump our "depth".

On the wings you've Jacobs who's very very good at L1 and okay at championship, we've an aging Conway who on paper should win but concerns arise if he again at 32 can hack 2 games a week whilst he looked poor last year. Corclough, Flores on paper somehow lose to Feeney.

goalie wise whilst impressed with Raya as I was under GB I'm worried when he drops a clanger has he got in him this time round to bounce back, Wigan signed Walton from Brighton who's tipped for big things so I'd suggest a draw with us possibly edging it.

Rb we trump at the moment through Caddis who should be steady and Nyambe lesser of a bomb scare a division lower should beat Nathan Byrne of last year but if Bryne gets back to Swindon form it could be difficult.

CB Mulgrew head and shoulders the best, ideally partnered by Daniels of Wigan who's a quick big strapping lad unfortunately he won't be fit for the start of the season. Will Lenihan be here? I'd take Daniels when for over him but he's better than Morgan though Morgan is very experienced at this level. Look out for Chey Dunkley, not signed by Cook but atherton. Very quick and brilliant at Oxford last year, goal scorer from set plays too. He could be one to watch this year, I'd take him over Wharton given Chey has about 90 games at Oxford under his belt.

LB Williams over our ex lad Matty James? James is far better going forwards but Williams I suggest looks a centre half any ways. James had a nasty injury last year so doubtful he will be as good as before.

So you can see...

I find that a bit harsh...How Grigg and Toney will grab 40 goals between them is a surprise to me. Grigg barely played last year. Yes he is good in league one but Graham is proven and the window is not closed I reckon we will sign another striker. With regards to their midfield our centre midfield is far stronger and has far more depth with Gladwin, Smallwood, Evans, Whittingham, Dack. The wings i would agree wigan are stronger. WIth regards to keepers I would take Raya as I truly believe other than the fact I am a Rovers supporter I think he has a bag of potential and will be a fantastic keeper. Defence wise Lenihan Caddis and Mulgrew would walk into their team but I do think Ward isn't strong enough. Overall, I still think our squad while it may have a few weaknesses here and there is still the strongest team in the division.

Gavlar and Gumboots - really hope I'm proven wrong but given what I've heard, I don't think I will be.

You don't really have to be Mystic Meg to suss out that Mulgrew wouldn't fancy playing in League one do you?

I'm surprised he's still here up to press. Perhaps his options for a move weren't as extensive as he would have hoped. If he does end up leaving I don't think he owes anyone here anything and should depart with everyone's best wishes. A Coyle signing that actually came off notwithstanding his injury worries.

If he doesn't move that's fine too, as long as he stays fit.

Being overly harsh on everything Rovers and not applying there same to the likes of Wigan does not make you impartial or objective.  It's getting boring.

TM is saying all the right things so far, it's almost like he reads the board and tries to address some of the concerns on here.  Venkys though...

Whatever they are it's not predictable, and we won't know either way until September, TM really does think Mulgrew and Lenihan will stay and he might just be right.

CENTRE HALF, CENTRE HALF, CENTRE HALF

Enough of this 'we can manage with x,y,z filling in there'.   Get someone decent in and if they have to replace one of the others so be it if they are commanding it'll be worth it over the season.

Too many weak links on that back line still.

Couldn't agree more with the above. We need specialists in every position, not making do with someone who can 'do a job there'. Not good enough.

Yet opposing teams always seem to have a plan to target Nyambe!

I would give Caddis a do on that side... we don't have any cover for Williams, and that is extremely worrying because he's such a poor player.

I'd be on the blower to Sheff Wed first thing Monday morning to see if Joao is available on loan or full transfer. I can't watch another game with Danny Graham trying to lead the line. Samuel looks like a bench player. Help needed

Rovers problem is they seldom function as a cohesive, collective unit - as a team. You could pretty much justify getting rid of most of the squad based on individual failings. None are world beaters!

We don't need world beaters, but getting the players to function as a cohesive unit is definitely the manager's responsibility.

And that, of course, is the job of the manager. Look at the Leicester City team that won the Prem, none of whom were really household names, and which couldn't repeat the feat. The manager is the catalyst in terms of team selection, motivating players to give 110% and creating synergy (i.e. the whole is greater than the sum of the parts). This is the alchemy that great managers seem to possess, and it creates a special kind of confidence and momentum amongst players and fans alike  - We have experienced this phenomenon with a number of managers during the Jack years, and its complete antithesis under the Venky regime. I don't think Tony Mowbray is an alchemist, to be honest. But he does inspire more confidence than some of the halfwits who have occupied the dugout in recent times.

Going back to transfers, it does seem glaringly obvious that we are in need of a stronger and more settled defensive combination, so need reinforcements there. Plus, if we are to score the 80 plus goals specified by TM, we have already slipped behind the run rate in our first outing, so will need to bring in someone capable of shaking things up there too. Lucas Joao in this league? Perhaps, if he can be gven lessons on where the goals are.

Not time to panic yet. Not time for smug expectation either!

COYB.

Venkys out! Backwards stawt!
