Which utterly brilliant manager will we be delighted to welcome next?

Annoyingly we don't even need a good manager, just the right fit for this club. Don't get me wrong I would prefer a good manager but every manager it seems has a club where it clicks. Hasslebank at Burton is the prime example of this. Goodness even Coyle who was useless (and am not advocating a reappointment) worked well at the Dingles for a few years. And contraversially I'd say Souness and us - never rated him prior to Rovers, but he excelled with us.

That we haven't appointed a good candidate or the right fit in so many appointments is dodgy as hell. Surely we should have got one right by now, even by chance, if there weren't untoward happenings.

There are enough things wrong with the club that we need a very specific fit compared to what most normal clubs would need though.

We need someone with drive and ambition, but who also won't ruffle the owners' feathers too much and is OK with our star striker being sold this summer. We need someone who can work with and develop youth, but also find quality players on a tiny budget. And we need someone tactically suited to the personnel we have, and those he can recruit on the small budget.

They also need to be able hit the ground running more or less, as there is a fractured fanbase. Make no mistake, a good chunk of the Mowbray in crowd who are gutted he is going and have engaged in inane defence of him for years will be more bothered about point scoring in the early days of a new boss. 'See, you were so desperate to get rid of Mowbray and now look who we've got instead and how it's going after two whole games' etc etc. Conversely, some of the people who have wanted him out are also people short of patience who will call for the next name early doors if he doesn't start well. Venkys themselves have shown a propensity to accept absolutely suicidal extended runs of form if a manager is already in their good books, but also that they will jettison a brand new boss for an indifferent run of early form while he's still getting up to speed.

We are likely at a point where, despite all logic when you assess our impending team depth and budget, expectations will probably be high for many as we just had a flirtation with the playoffs that lasted most of the season. We've never stayed in the top 6 this long since relegation, or even close. With our resource, asset and staff turnover issues this summer, midtable would realistically be a decent achievement for next season, but I doubt many would accept that anymore.

Venkys would not hire anyone with the slightest chance of us getting to PL..they want us as a mid table championship club ...occasionally sniffing up the table ...there's definitely something off

There is no reason Venkys would want to keep us in the Championship writing off 20 million losses every season when there is an absolute jackpot in the Prem. None at all. They wouldn't have to spend big on the squad if they didn't want, nobody could force them. They could recoup a huge chunk of their losses with just one doomed season there.

Would take Farke in a heartbeat.

Dyche at the helm thumping Burnley twice next season would also be something special.

It would have to be in the cups. Burnley just aren't coming down anymore, sadly. Lucky fuckers that lot.

Farke would be a brilliant appointment, but let's face it Ainsworth will be a lot cheaper.

Ex Premier League vs League 1.

Whoever gets the job it's going to take them a couple of seasons to sort out.

Hiring someone of Farkes calibre this week could maybe help sway a couple of  our better soon to be out-of-contract players to stick around

And tempt more renewals

This shouldn't really be too difficult should it?

The two outstanding candidates (Farke and Dyche) are out of work.

There's no need to go trawling through a list of inferior candidates. All we need to do is to get our CEO to persuade them to come and negotiate the terms.

Oh wait..........

if you think these poundshop owners are going to pay for the likes of Dyche and Farke to come here I’m having a pint of what on.

No ney never! Delusional Rev.

Then all they need do is give Mowbray a new long term contract and midtable is all but guaranteed.

Some really good points here. Interestingly in past times Coyle.and Grayson may have fitted the bill from this criteria (Coyle got Burnley promoted on a shoe string, Grayson worked under batnuts owners at Blackpool and got promoted on a budget.) Not suggesting either - although at one point I though Grayson was the way to go - but rather to illustrate the right fit is possible even in our challenging circumstances.

As to uniting the fans I don't think that's an issue. Venkys don't care about owner popularity or anything else it seems and so won't not appoint or quickly sack just because the fans don't like him.

Hopefully someone who doesn’t think that developing young players is the priority.

The academy is there to provide those and the managers priority is to assemble a squad that can win games.

I do believe that since Venkys took over and dissembled a Premier League squad with the idea that rovers could only prosper by bringing through youngsters then selling on, the focus has been far too much on player development.  Mowbray said on Saturday the new manager should focus on that also.

12 years later - how’s it working?

On this basis it makes even more sense to appoint Farke.

He brought numerous youth players into the first team, good players too. Aarons, Cantwell, Jamal Lewis.

Depends who's taking care of the recruitment but if they're aware of of details like that their ears should be pricking up.

think the next manager should be one that isn’t a results focused manager but a performance based one. Hopefully someone not too concerned by league tables. Preferably one that can take us on a journey who mixes things up with different formations, style, personnel and tactics.

Really should have someone lined up already but knowing Venky's it will be late August with no signings before then.

Farke and Dyche have a proven track-record of getting out of this league and that must be exactly what Venky's are looking for. No compensation package for either, besides -  Venky's refused to let Rothwell go for £3m in January so surely money can't be an issue here?

Dyche was on over 3m a year, they'd pull their faces paying anything like that, Farke should be a lot cheaper.

A speculative name and probably not ready but Liam Rosenior seemed a very knowledgeable TV pundit (which, admittedly, proves nothing when it comes to coaching and managing) and has, it seems been proving himself as assistant manager at Derby County, under the helm of Rooney. I'd prefer to see someone like Rosenior considered - even as assistant or joint manager, if not the main man, than a tired and recycled old name.

Like a few others here, I would like to see Damien Johnson step up and test himself in a more senior role. Bringing back Billy Barr from Salford in a more senior role too, after his sterling work for the U23s, might be an option.

But as for who would make a good manager, it's so hard to tell (though, I can, with some confidence, rule out certain combustible or recycled names). It's a gamble but if the club also encourage some internal progression with the likes of Johnson, it provides some stability and options if the next appointee doesn't succeed. Having Tony Parkes to steer us through difficult times was very helpful and it will encourage good coaching staff to join Rovers if they can see a path to progression.

Edit: On the bigger picture, the new man (woman...) has a huge job to deal with, with a squad overhaul in the offing. There is the exodus of players, several on frees and a few expected sales, there are the fringe players whose careers have stalled, such as Edun and JRC and then there are a few U18s prospects. The new manager doesn't have the luxury of players coming through of the calibre of Scott Wharton, Travis, Nyambe, Lenihan, Buckley knocking on the door. There's a few hopes in the U23s but with a barely any first team experience.

In a sense, the present squad has reached an end of a cycle and the current management have neglected in planning and successfully working to bridge the team for the next cycle of first teamers. Reliance on loanees has plugged gaps temporarily but will leave us severely lacking again by the end of the season. There's a real risk of plunging into the mire of relegation trouble if the right person for this moment isn't selected.

I think Johnno’s ship has sailed, unfortunately he’s now been tarred with the Mowbray brush.
