His brother died with him. Tragedy.

This news has stopped me in my tracks.  Shocking, he only got married a few weeks ago and has 3 young children.  He regularly does Twitch Streams of hjm playing Fifa (FC) which I have watched and seemed like a really nice guy.  RIP and thoughts/prayers with his family.

How absolutely awful. A huge tragedy for his family. Monumentally less important, but he was also a superb footballer.

Whoever you are, whatever you achieve, it's all so fragile, isn't it? Very sad.

Terrible news. Heartbroken for his family, especially with his brother passing away in the same accident.

Just tragic, awful news.

The fragility, and sometimes briefness, of life puts everything into perspective.

RIP

Tragic news about Diogo Jota.

Football is insignificant when we hear news like this.

My thoughts are with his friends and family.

Rest in Peace.

devasting news and Jota was a class player.

Thanks for memories and my thoughts go to his wife, children, family, friends and Liverpool.

You will never walk alone

A rather irrelevant point given the tragedy, but the modern game means players lack something of their game identity. Will we remember Diogo as a great winger or striker or an amalgam?

Whilst what happened to Jota was desperately sad I do find the decision by Liverpool to retire his number 20 shirt to be a completely unnecessary and typically over the top modern day decision.

I'm sure he was a decent enough player for them but he only played 120 odd times - he's hardly Ron Yeats or Kenny or Rush is he? If the Club had retired the number of every great former player who'd graced their shirt they'd have no numbers left to give out.

It would have been far more of a tribute to him to retain the number so that those who wore it in future were playing in his memory and for the number to become synonymous with him like the no. 7 shirt is with Keegan and Dalglish.

I have never been one for retiring shirt numbers for whatever reason, it implies that a given player is bigger than the club which should never be true.

Clubs who retire number 12 as 'the fans are the twelfth man' should be liquidated and their directors imprisoned.
