  1. I think people need to accept that it's okay to disagree with decisions Mowbray has made without: 1) Being negative 2) Calling for his head Literally every manager of any football club on the planet will have his decisions questioned from time to time.

  2. We've fallen way behind Burnley because of Chaddy's footballing IQ?! DAMN YOU CHADDY!!! Why did you have to go and sack Allardyce, hire Kean, marginalise John Williams and the board, sign Murphy and Etuhu, sell our best players for peanuts, keep Bowyer in charge for too long, fail to find a way around FFP and hire that charlatan Owen Coyle!?! You and your useless footballing IQ!

  3. Lighten up for once F**k me. That was the best game of football I've watched as a neutral in a long time. Ronaldo is what he is, but what he is, is a big game player and he will without doubt go down as one of the greats. We won't ever have 2 players like him and Messi playing at the same time again in our lifetime so savour it. Unbelievable Jeff

  6. This might be the best World Cup match I’ve ever watched. Brilliant. 3-3 would be a deserved result. But not over yet. (Oh, and Danny Marmite was wrong again).

  7. Where have these defensive capabilities of Conway's come from? In his better years I never had him down as a winger who particularly relished in the defensive side of his game. He has a high work rate but he's hardly a player renowned for his tenacity in the tackle. It's almost as if a benefit of him being here has snowballed into this idea that Conway is suddenly a player we can rely on against the big teams to defend from the front. I don't think that's the case at all. Bennett alluded to his influence in the dressing room. I'd argue that's a bigger trait than any of his supposed defensive qualities. In regards to Gladwin - he doesn't have a position davulsukur. He's just a poor player with a bad attitude. Definitely a "wrong one".

  8. Ironically I’ve never thought Conway’s defensive play was up to much often he gives it away but is too slow to get back. He is more disciplined than some more youthful options but I would hope he won’t even make the bench for most games, with a fully fit squad last season I potentially wouldn’t have had him there and you’d hope the Squad will be better this time around.

  9. The only people happy if we were playing Conway instead of (hopefully) Chapman... are playing for the opposition.

  10. Here in lies the rub. The squad that finished the season (including Payne, a fit Chapman and Armstrong) is stronger than the one that came down but those loanees are no longer here and there are no guarantees they will be back. Lets be honest, I've seen some optimistic fees banded about for Armstrong but realistically, if he was our player, would you let him go for less than £3 million plus add ons? Chapman, World Cup honours for England under 20s. Can't imagine a tribunal fee would be low. We got £400k for Mahoney and he hasn't the pedigree of Chapman. Jack Payne is another who would likely command a 7 figure fee. On top of that, we definitely need another 3 first team players. Everyone knows we need to add height and pace. As others have said, Graham is a decent proposition for 1 year. Conway isn't unless it is very low wages. Our Talisman is Dack. The first contract renewal announced should have been his. Keep the positive momentum going. Last year was a pivotal one, could we stop the rot? We did and gained some momentum and belief back. This season is massive. We could end up with a competitive side that may bloody a few noses and have us sniffing around the playoffs - like the Rovers of old or, conversely, we could see Dack refuse to sign, Lennihan run his contract down and the players we were all enthused about signing, drift off to teams ready to spend the money. Followed by a relegation battle. Hoping for the former - as I've renewed! I'd love to trust Mowbray to deliver on his pre season musings, but the cynic in me isn't convinced he will get the finances. Final point. From a marketing perspective, you would want to announce the 'big' signings/news after the early bird offer has closed. That way any exciting signings will negate the negativity of the price hike!

  11. The fat Ronaldo in his prime before injury was for me as good as both. However, there's no comparison. These two have been breaking records and winning trophies year after year for 10 years or more. Scoring 50 goals a season! We won't ever see the like again in our lifetime, too have TWO players at the top of their game doing it year after year competing against each other on the biggest stages, like I said, it should be savoured. We all know why you really hate Ronaldo, he's ex United if he'd have played for the blue side of Manchester who we all know you've got a soft spot for then you'd be his biggest fan

  12. Ronaldo is one of those players who make football a "beautiful" game. It's just something in the way he moves. The best player in the world and has been for some time.

  15. I hate when people say too much negativity. People can give views contrary to what has happened, and ones that go against what Mowbray has done. Just like I was delighted about Graham, and said why, I feel that I am entitled to say why I dont feel Conway offers anything ON the pitch.

  16. I would have thought that in his 4 year contract wages would rise with promotions etc still has 3 years left, lets see how he performs in this league then offer him a longer deal in January .
    2 points
  17. But whilst I appreciate that professionalism, experience, all these buzzwords, are important traits. They are not enough to earn a contract alone. You need to be offering something on the pitch and me and many others seem to think that hes not offering enough any more. The argument of "he must be good for morale therefore no one can question the decision" is a faulty one.

  18. You seem to be forgetting that it was TM himself who said he wanted to get the transfer issues settled as early as possible. You can hardly blame fans who are uncomfortable that no new players have been signed yet. Plenty of time left yet obviously but this club has a history under Venkys of too little too late.

  19. To be fair, about half of their team are well known to European fans. In any case, we can get a sense of the pedigree of the squad even if we haven't seen all of them play. D. Sanchez is quality for his age, but wouldn't be getting in our squad yet if he was English. C. Sanchez didn’t play every week for Villa when they were awful. Ospina’s a good shot stopper but an accident waiting to happen beyond that. Believe that Falcao has started scoring again now he's back at Monaco, but hardly the most competitive league in the world. Hard worker and a good finisher, not someone to be overly scared of. Rodriguez & Cuadrado are clearly good players, but England have some too (at least of the same level as Cuadrado). England have lost to worse teams! But it's not getting ahead of ourselves to say we should be favourites to get to the quarters if this is the best that we have to play. Watch us lose to Panama now I've said all that

  20. Have to disagree. Conway was dreadful for the vast majority of last season in terms of his overall play not just his non contribution in terms of assists and goals.

  21. They aren't attacking players and goal scorers like those 3 but Xavi & Iniesta at their peak were world class (Iniesta in fact still is) & as good anyone that I have ever seen in that central midfield position.

  23. You can't have seem much of Platini to say that. He was every bit as good as Zidane in his day. Regarding the best - Pele is head and shoulders above all the rest. Maradona is probably next in line.

  28. Bielsa is a maverick, this is a massive statement being made by Leeds United. The likelihood of him being a success is 50/50 imo... However he is a massive name, managed Chile, Argentina, Athletic Bilbao amongst others. Leeds will be great to watch next year, I'm intrigued to see what happens...

  29. It depends what you expect from a striker over the course of a season but I Wouldn't consider someone who scores 5 goals over the season and doesn't score a goal after December as being able to score at any particular level. Wikipedia also only have him as having scored around 20 career goals and he's 24 which surprised me. He's getting on a bit to be an up and coing young thing with potential, at that age he should be very near to his peak.

  30. Worth remembering that our first major signing last summer was Bradley Dack on June 27th. Both the Football League Championship and League One season's start at the same time. Although Mowbray has said he wants to make the bulk of our signings before we fly off to Austria, I wouldn't be terribly concerned if we don't bring in anyone in the next week or two. Rather we got it right and signed the Dack's and Smallwood's as opposed to the Hart's and Caddis's...

  32. Slavan Bilic has just broken the golden rule of invited pundits and made a great point about the negative effect our broadcast media has on England. I paraphrase but: ”Why do you always show clips of England players missing penalties or John Terry crying on the pitch or Joe Hart, with music like from The Omen? The players always watch this before games” He went on to make a bigger deal about it but that was nail on the head. We always highlight failure. It’s like we have to wallow in pity and mourning all the time. Why can’t they promote our good results or moments?
    1 point
  33. We can’t all be as well schooled in the game as you, Joe. Lucky for us that Conway has the gift of eternal youth and his legs go forever. How long a deal should we have given him? In your expert opinion of course. 2 years? 5? A. You think only experienced players can defend/mark at corners? B. Conway isn’t catching his man. Certainly not an ex-PL winger. C. Don’t try to be clever. You can’t carry it off. Nice that you use an example of one set play as a reason to have Conway instead of someone like Chapman. No, not nice, desperate. 70 minutes from Conway in the Championship will be a big ask. I actually hope you are right and he can be a big player for us this season. But he didn’t really manage to be such an influence. last season, a year younger and a division lower. Be honest, he is here for his experience in the dressing room not 70 minute matches and () helping to avoid younger players not defend corners.

  34. Chaddy, not everything is positive. Never mentioned either of those things. Im on about solely Conways contract and "stop being negative" doesnt in anyway support the decision made by Mowbray. Just as I was delighted that Graham is staying, as he offers plenty on the pitch as well seemingly as off it. Thats nowhere near enough to be considered an attacking threat. 2 goals when already winning games so his goals got us 0 points. His assist v Southend was good but overall. Nowhere near enough. His legs have gone.

  35. 100%. Godin is class at the back, but other than that, man for man Belgium are way better. Belgium's achilles heel will be in the dug out.....

  36. I imagine this idea comes more from his workrate and positional understanding than from any crunching tackles. His workrate isn't quite as beneficial as it used to be since his legs are going though. Personally I'm fine with having him as a squad fringe player as long as his new deal is hugely reduced. He isn't the fantastic player he was though, and I didn't expect us to offer him another contract. But if it's a far cheaper one year deal, and he isn't seen as anything more than backup, I'm ok with it.

  37. The only time I've seen him play in the flesh was in the egg cup game at Rochdale. To be honest he looked to be one of our better players that night but that's not saying a great deal. Nobody really looked the part, especially after we went down to 10 men. I thought he had a good touch for a big guy and a good change of pace that enabled him to get past people. He was two footed and could go either way. He played out wide at first but when we went down to 10 he came more inside. I'd say his best position is similar to the role Dack plays.

  38. I'd rather go for the naturally left footed Rose. I'd go Walker right wing back, Stones, Cahill & Maguire as the back 3, with Rose on the other side. Henderson/Dier can't really see much of a difference there. Rest of the side picks its self I think.

  39. Just remembered that Sam Hart will be back after his loan at Rochdale with another 12 months still to go....

  40. There's probably a 10% that Bielsa will be a masterstoke and a 90% chance it will go horribly wrong and he won't last the season. Big question marks - his stock has fallen massively, questions about his methods, he seems to fall out with every club he works at, very strange goings on particularly at Lazio, yet no denying he's a big name and a bit of a coup for a mid-table Championship side, and I doubt he'll come cheap. Half looks to me like Leeds are trying to make a statement by appointing a high profile manager but again are doing a complete about turn going down a very different path with a huge gamble when there are much safer options out there. I don't think I'd want him at Rovers and I'd be more comfortable with Mowbray or most other Championship managers at the helm making decisions. A combination of Bielsa's reputation, turnover in jobs and Leeds' rate of managers suggests he'll do very well to last the season.

  43. I was a bit surprised when I heard no world cup host nation have ever lost their opening match, including giants such as Switzerland, Sweden, Chile, the USA, South Korea, Japan and South Africa. If Qatar avoid defeat in their first match in 2022 I'm calling conspiracy and putting my tin hat on. I'm sure it's just a coincidence that Russia's opening game was against an extremely poor team whose defence looked like it had been purposefully bribed to play as if drunk.

  44. Negativity breeds negativity, top 6 for me!
    1 point
  45. Possibly, but I doubt it. I wouldn't have predicted us to go down if I was too far on the optimistic side I'd suggest! You did just admit to being pessimistic yourself, so maybe I look too optimistic as a result of that? I'm not generally known for my boundless optimism lol, I've been accused of being a negative person many, many times in my life. But I just call it how I see it. Not too worried about this season. I expect we might spend some little patches hovering around the relegation zone, but I do expect a roughly mid-table finish by the end.

  46. Me! Once tipped myself to become the next Shearer but women, booze, and undersized goals made from jumpers and with imaginary crossbars (that was in, that was in!) meant that my goalscoring record was a pitiful one in six pints.

  47. Why is Paul O'Grady in a Schalke kit? Anyway, I don't understand why so many people love that Nigerian shirt they'll wear in the world cup. It's hideous and reminds me of some sort of early 90s shell suit, or the various awful away kits Scotland wore around that time.

  48. I remember seeing Emile Heskey as a very young player at Leicester. He was awesome, pace and power in a young body. He was running through and over good centre halves. I thought I was looking at the next Shearer. The older he got the worse he got.
