v QPR (h) - 30/7/22

Recommended Posts

Coukdnt of expect better given the circumstances. Looked assured at the back, many positives to take out of the game only negatives are the midfield was over run too easily so the forwards didn’t press enough for me and also outwide we gave them too much but dealt with it well none the less.

strange that jdt didn’t use more than one sub but that’s possibly down to trying not to lose what we were doing as subs can cause that but thought the game late on was crying out for dack and maybe Markanday, we lacked that urgency when in a good position on the counter but maybe that was part of the plan. The forwards need to have more urgency and hunger to get into the box for a delivery as it looked frustrating fjr the full backs when they was in a good position to swing one in but runners when Gallagher especially should be front and centre… really don’t like him as a wideman

kaminski -  as assured and reliable as ever

Brittain - not bad at all looked decent

Ayala - as assured and solid as ever

wharton -  brilliant

pickering - grew into the game not bad at all

travis - did what Travis does best

gallager - not his position looked lost and sluggish all game

hedges - grew into it vardy useful player but by no means a best 11 starter

BBD - did well had to come in and collect more than he should have but played well

Vale - looked a lost child, the transition from pre season to the real thing he struggled with, shouldn’t have started, best from the bench

Dolan - brilliant when he comes on always brings drive and energy

we definitely need a couple midfielders an experienced CB and out and out striker

It wasn’t a cracker by any means but delighted with the win. Whilst it didn’t happen often enough, some of our one touch attacking play looked promising. I thought the midfield had a Rothwell shaped hole in it though. We didn’t have anyone who could pick the ball up in the centre and allow us to dictate play higher up the pitch so I hope we can get someone in for that. I enjoyed some of Hedges’ performances towards the end of last season but thought he was poor today. He seems to get brushed off the ball in the centre very easily.

I was hoping Pickering would prove some people wrong today but he was out of his depth. Brittain was underwhelming. I was willing him to get the ball and drive forward but it seemed to me he played with the shackles on.

Today really highlighted that we need quality in through the door. I’m feeling positive though that we still managed to win fairly comfortably with the squad that we have.

Feel like Hedges looked dynamic at times however he lost the ball way too easily in dangerous positions. Brittain had a fantastic debut bags of energy and refreshingly no nonsense defending. Pickering couldn't pick a pass but I do feel he defended well and isn't deserving of the shit he's getting. Ayala and Wharton I feel are a great partnership and one I think many championship strikers would struggle against. Vale got bullied a little bit but grew into things. All in all iffy first half with a more assured second. Good building block for the season.

Interesting to read so many different opinions. Early season matches are always a bit hit and miss. Some promising moves that came to nothing - but you could see the intent.

I don't think anyone had a bad match - but some were only average at best.

Though Travis goal was something else, my MOM was Buckley. Didn't think they would work as a pair - how wrong was I - if they can avoid injury and cards - they have the ability to really push us forward. Though you have worry about defensive midfield against better teams.

steep learning curve for vale, this is proper football, the two qpr centre backs had him in their pocket,

Especially being completely on his own up there. Tough ask for any player.

Whoever does that role is onto a hiding. We should really sign a specialist to do it tbh if we're not going to let BBD or Gallagher have a go.

A win is a win and all that. Well done.

Positives – team appeared to know what they were doing, were energetic, good tippy/tappy and movement, someone has had a think about corners, someone has got into Travis’s head that he can pass in a curler for a goal (needs 5 a season from midfield).

Negatives-Brereton not fully at it (going soon?), this team will not win promotion, simply not enough quality and goal threat,  Brittain –don’t buy all the praise, Gally, Kaminski kicking, passing in the final third, reinforcements needed for sure.

As an aside, has anyone had a go at the ref yet? Always an easy target for the weak or losers.

QPR looked quick and tidy but I can’t remember any goal threat apart from the screamer that hit the bar. QPR were poor and totally ineffectual in a slow build up and attempt to go through the middle. Their number 2 on the right was in acres of space for most of the second half but only received the ball early from a diagonal once. He shifted onto his left (didn’t need to even beat Pickering) and crossed. Result, they nearly and should have scored.

What on earth was that crap heavy metal just before the game?

And what about that silly email prior to the game re large queues due to checks at the gate and transport issues? I told my wife that we better get there early as there would be queues miles down the road. We waltzed in at 2.20 easy. J

Anyway, all best everyone for the season ahead.

Is that a rule that the added time shouldn’t be shown on the clock? Always wondered why it never showed it

The scoreboard clock should stop at 45 and 90 minutes. Essentially it's to prevent controversy. If the fourth official indicates three minutes and a goal is scored after the scheduled three minutes there would be an out in the stadium (although the time indicated is a minimum). Although anybody can use their watches to time it but not many do (I always do pretty much out of habit).

Agree on the music....it certainly highlights our very poor PR system.

Football is all about results so great to be back at Ewood and great to see us win.

The performance was a mixed bag, the right side of an attritional game in not far off the most favourable game we could have wished for to start against an average side without their best player.

Kaminski was untested really aside from one great save and a few wobbles, and I felt that the whole back 4 was very good. The centre backs stood out, Brittain was tidy on debut and I feel that Pickering's reputation is preceding him, he was really steady with an excellent block towards the end.

The midfield 2 were also very good, Travis obviously scored a screamer but also was a leader. Buckley was excellent on the ball on the half turn but he needs to keep a lid on his immaturity, he should have been sent off and QPR had fair grievance that we got lucky with that, he won't be far from a red card if he cannot keep his discipline if he picks up a yellow card.

The front 4 were in the main pretty poor and there is a lot of work to do there. Brereton was good and offered our only goal threat. Hedges was the best of the other 3 although he isn't a number 10 and he was quite clumsy and loose at times. Gallagher out wide was as poor as usual and Tomasson should scrap that. And I that Vale looks a million miles off being a Championship starter, he looked like a boy lost in a mans game. We need a central striker in the window 100%.

The use of subs was interesting, there is a balance to be had now you can make 5 and it was quite brave to only make 1 especially on the opening day but it worked.

Looking to Swansea, the keeper, back 4 and midfield 2 pick themselves as well as Brereton. I would suggest that Dack, Dolan, Markanday and if signed Szmodics could all justifiably expect to start.

We need some recruits ASAP as we look very thin at the moment, if we had got a defensive injury we would have struggled.

The only criticism I can give from that performance is Pickering gave the ball away far to much and we didn’t create many chances .

However for the first game of the season it was a promising performance and we never gave them a sniff near our goal.  The football was far more fluid and played at a better tempo than anything I saw under Mowbray.

Overall delighted with the result and happy with the performance going forward. Optimistic shoots and let’s see where we can go from here with a few additions and more time working on the team shape. I’m positive and optimistic going forward .

i had a season ticket for peps first season at Man City for the first four season from when he took over to when kompany smashed the winner against Leicester for the title. I remember listening to the fans saying peps style wasn’t suited to the prem. I watched and could see , even though there were lots of mistakes and players who couldn’t play in that system or style, how it’s was developing and told them to be patient. Maybe I wouldn’t have been if it was rovers . Anyway the point being is city took two steps forward and one back . I know it’s only one game but I urge all rovers fans for patients to let JDT get the right personnel in, the wrong out and give the players time to learn the system.

Happy blue today. 💙🤍

One question I've got is really how different a setup was it to Mowbray really if we're honest. Very similar.

And I don't mean that as a negative to JDT just that really the way Mowbray set us up wasn't that daft. He wanted Nyambe out, he played Gallagher on the wing and BBD on the left.

It may well evolve over time but it's hardly chalk and cheese. People got fed up with Mowbray but he played a similar game to what we saw today.

So I guess the question is what does JDT need to do to be better than Mowbray as that's what we all want to move onwards and upwards?

He was poor

Have to 100% disagree on this. He was solid, especially late on the game, won a few key 1v1's. Was a very promising start and a great defensive performance all round. A firm 7/10.

Reminder about point 1. We aren’t having people being accused of being fans of other clubs, just as we aren’t having people being called club plants.

Just stop it.

Just a reminder for those with short memories.

Agree with most of what’s been said - first half was a bit flat before the goal, but we picked up and improved further in the second half.

Strange how opinions can differ from those in the ground to those watching on telly.

I thought Brittain looked a mile better than Nyambe going forward. And he did fine at the other end too.

Pickering and Hedges, the two current favourites for being picked on, it seems, both did fine. Could be better, but they both played their part - Hedges getting the assist for Trav’s goal was a bonus.

And I thought Vale showed some very tidy touches and definitely didn’t look out of place at all.

What I did find interesting, as I was sat not too far from the bench, was seeing and hearing JDT giving out his instructions; he’s very clear on what he wants.

At points in the second half, he was literally telling BBD where to position himself to gain maximum advantage of space/etc.

3 points, that’s the important part and an okay performance. Some of the close control and passing was very impressive at times, but we were also wasteful in others and a better team that QPR might have taken advantage.

Look forward to seeing who joins and how they make us stronger in the next couple of weeks 🔵

Makes a lovely change from fraudbray chewing a wasp hands in pockets with no interaction and ends up sending his gk coach to give tactical talks and briefings
