What a beautiful ugly win! Four pieces of class won it for us: Nyambe's run and pull back for goal 1 Gallagher's strike for goal 2 and two Kaminsky saves Huge credit to the Barnsley boss. He has those players playing far above their level of ability. Set pieces are outstanding. So much variety brilliantly delivered.

Credit to Barnsley, came here and gave us a major test. Play like that every week and they won't have to worry about a relegation battle this season. Winning whilst not playing well is a skill we have rarely exhibited during the Venky era, so it's nice to see we have that in our locker. Kaminski immense today - the difference between a win and at the very least a draw, maybe even a loss. With Walton in goal we definitely don't win this one.

It's a shame words like 'scapegoats' are so often used completely incorrectly. To call either BB or SG scapegoats is a complete rewriting of history and laughable in any context. Both players were bought for significant sums and until this season produced little to nothing to justify those fees. They were quite rightly identified as weak links in the team because until this season (and the last two games in Gallagher's case) that's exactly what they were. It's great that the pair of them are finally finding their feet and that is being recognised across the board.

Mid table teams usually win one, draw one and lose one. Then repeat. Then repeat. We’re now five games unbeaten. Maybe, just maybe, we’re moving up to that next level.

Poor performance great result. Kaminsky had a really good game, Bell and Nyambe played quite well, thought Wharton was outstanding before his unfortunate injury, was getting his head or foot on the end of everything. For once I thought Mowbray got the subs exactly right we were much improved after Johnson and Gallagher came on. Wouldn't normally advocate Gallagher but such was Barnsley's initial dominance we needed an outlet and he also took his goal very well. Take the points and move on.

The Rovers commentators "they cant possibily score 2 in the last 10 mins"... sometimes they should just shut up.

Honestly I bore myself defending Mowbray, but I will continue to do so, just like I would defend the likes of Armstrong and Johnson. The European scouting gets ridiculed, but if it gets us just Kaminski it’s worth it to me. We are seeing the same with the scapegoats (Brereton and Gallagher) who were obviously signed on big fees to develop for future and now we are finally starting to see it. Mowbray has built a really, really good young squad and this is the season I expect results, and I really hope he gets them.

Carter did not inspire any confidence with his contribution in the last 15 mins. Looks like an accident waiting to happen as he was at Luton last season. Have tp pray that Wharton is fit to resume on Wednesday.

Despite being second best in most areas we found a way to win which was extremely satisfying. Barnsley certainly tested us and if it had been last season or the season before they would have taken the lead but the excellent Kaminski put paid to that. After a poor first fifteen minutes Nyambe was first class and showed exactly why we should be prioritising a new deal for him. If he is allowed to walk away it would be absolutely negligent. Hopefully Wharton will be fit for Wednesday as he looks the best partner for Lenihan so far this season. Overall a good three points.

Tremendous today. 2 of those saves were as good as goals at the other end! What a strange week for him - Spent Tuesday night doing his online Christmas shopping at Deepdale & then has to be at his best to turn in a MoM display today. Very impressed! ??

A bit nervy at times but Barnsley played well and we had to be at our dogged best to keep them out. Kaminski MOM but special praise to Lenighan and Wharton who were on top form today.

I actually think Wharton has been solid, not seen him do too much wrong. Barnsley have looked good but they’re not carving us open, just strangling us on the ball really. They’re doing well stopping Holtby getting on the ball. I actually think Bell has been pretty solid since coming on and was our best forward threat for about 20 mins. Someone posted early on in the thread that they’d take a scrappy 1-0 all day and hopefully it’s that kind of day (at worst)

In other news, Brunley look to be on the wrong end of a larrupping at Man City.

Why the Wharton bashing? He’s done well lately and is there to defend, which he’s doing fine.

So typical of mowbrays tenure, a really great performance and result that gets the fans all giddy and talk of a promotion charge followed by a weak as piss performance and result. Sigh. luckily I don’t get caught up in the hullabaloo, I would need to see those performances consistently before I believe any hype

Hey everyone, I'm one of the boot room staff here at BRFCS, I look after the servers and make sure they don't fall over ... or rather, get them running again when they do, I'm BRFCS' Mike Pettigrew if you will. With that in mind that I've been doing some work with the admins and mods to try and make the site a bit more resilient, it's no Vince Grella for staying on it's feet as it is, but it's no Derek Fazackerley either, it could be better. Over this coming weekend there will have to be some downtime (not during the game, I'll be watching that) as I start the work, then again in a few weeks there will be a bit more while I do some more work. I'll try and do it during quiet times, but inevitably there will be some who cannot access the site when they would like ... sorry about that.

Well its an old saying about the successful teams being the ones that don't play well and win, or maybe we got a bit lucky today? Dunno. What's different this season for me is that we aren't relying on everyone playing well, nor are we relying on a single player bailing us out. Previously we've seen it where if Dack plays shit we lose etc. The full team/squad are carrying the can. I seriously doubt there's many better squads in the league right now. We've had it rough with injuries but absorbed it, only Norwich have had it worse than us. PNE have had it rough and their lack of depth shows. Who the hell scouted Kaminski? Get him a pay rise and make him chief scout! Millwall are a really really dull team, that's gonna be a tough nut to crack against the draw specialists. Win that and I get a bit giddy.

Brereton wasn't used as a scapegoat, he was simply pointed out as being a huge waste of money when other areas of the team - goalkeeper and defence primarily - were being criminally overlooked. Arguably our defence still has been. Even when taking into account how Brereton played this season, there's no doubt in my mind that such a significant amount of money could have been spent far more wisely than on a single player who was not ready for the first team at the time of signing. Whilst we are looking okay at the moment, let's not get ahead of ourselves with talk of how we've been saved. As it stands we remain a mid-table Championship team - the same as we have been for the vast majority of time under Venky's reign. Mowbray has done a good job of getting us out of League 1 and stabilising us back into the position we were in 5 years ago, but let's also remember he hasn't had to sell a single player and has been given plenty of money to spend in order to do so. To claim success we require a top six finish at the very least - as it stands we are still in a position where as soon as we get within touching distance we seem to mentally implode. We are yet to beat any of the better teams in the league yet this season. There are still barriers we need to break down before we can truly say we are going in the right direction, rather than seeing a rerun of the Bowyer years. I would love for Mowbray to be the man to finally give us something to look forward to after a decade of nothingness, but for me at least the jury is still out for as long as we continue our aversion to being in the top six of the division for any significant amount of time.

If Nyambe goes, I'll be sooo disappointed. I really haven't seen the flaws TM & others have claimed. He will only get better and stronger. An genuinely ambitious club needs Nyambe.

Kaminski made the different. Some of his saves were world class. He was unlucky with the goal as the shot was hit into the ground.

Scrappy win. Not at our best and struggled with their set pieces. But. 3pts. We need to eek some more of these type of wins.

In the autumn of last year a lot of us (me included) were slating Armstrong, Brereton and Gallagher. Then Armstrong started scoring and the problem became Brereton and Gally. Then Brereton started this season in good form but Gally was a waste of space... Got to hold my had up and say it's looking increasingly like I was very wrong, and I'm pretty happy about it!

Wharton been the best player on the pitch imo, gutted that’s he’s had to come off. Hopefully he’ll be back for Millwall.

Which is called attacking, no? Centre halves are normally your worst technical players anyway.

I am very impressed how Wharton took his chance. For a couple of seasons it didn't seem like he would ever get a game but now he has really shown himself to be capable and deserves his run in the team

Very underrated was Newell. That goal against Derby in the PO's was a moment of genius. He scores a similar goal in that Bristol City clip, but this time with the other foot. Not many can do that. Brilliant player.

The Grand Final, last night, was one of the best Rugby League games I have ever seen. An absolute arm wrestle of a match. Saints won 8-4 with a freakish try right on 80 minutes. They had enjoyed the better of the possession and territory but Wigan’s defence was immense. When Wigan edged ahead 4-2 with 10 mins left, that could have been it but more drama was to come. St Helens levelled it to 4-4 with a harsh penalty for an alleged high tackle and then Wigan were awarded a penalty of their own with 2 mins remaining. They opted to try for the two points on offer instead of going for field position and going for the drop goal, which would have undoubtedly won the game. Zak missed, Saints came upfield, went for their own drop goal. They also missed but the ball bounced back off one of the posts, down into the field of play then spun wildly, taking it into the in goal area, where one of theirs touched the ball down to win the game. You couldn’t have written it. The tackling during the game was brutal and both teams must take credit for their defence and stamina. It’s not very often that low scoring games have you on the edge of your seat. To put (association) footballers to shame with their play acting and cheating feigning injury, Wigan’s centre Oliver Gildart tweeted a photo of himself with Joe Burgess, saying between them they had a broken finger and a broken jaw. Wigan’s Jackson Hastings took studs in the face, leaving him cuts to his forehead, eyebrow and cheek, two of which looked like they could have done with stitches. St Helens’ James Graham took a tackle early on that could have damaged one or more ribs (when that lad stays down, you know he’s hurt) and their Walmsley somehow managed to finish the game, despite being severely injured. All the aforementioned carried on playing, without even the hint of a whinge towards either the ref or their own bench. Most of these lads are on about £75k per YEAR or less. A big shout out to two legends of the game who retired after the match, Warriors’ Sean O’Loughlin and Saints’ James Graham. It’s been a pleasure to watch you both. What an advert for the game. If no one can get interested in Rugby League after that, then there’s no chance. I am deeply disappointed but there’s always next season. We go again.

I don't know about Armstrong being thee best. Will be controversial because of the amount of goals he has but do think he stops a lot of our attacks by always looking for the shot. Works well for him but if he played a few more wide passes we may get more goals. He's up there though no doubt about it. I think Rothwell and Holtby are the game changers. If they are on the same pitch I feel confident we can win. Lose one and the replacements don't quite cut the mustard and we find ourselves losing the midfield battle.

I'd hate to see what happens when you do start making judgements.

Mowbray did specifically say after PNE that “On my board we’ve got 11 fixtures between now and the new year and players like 17-year-old Harvey Elliott can’t be playing all of them." I dont think there would be any realistic expectation for Elliott to play every single game, and having got a knock I hardly expect that Liverpool would be in any way annoyed should he not start tomorrow, I think obviously its a different matter should he have ever been regularly out of the team and we would have been financially penalised should that have happened. No doubts from me that Elliott is a better player than Gallagher but I think the latter could feel hard done by should he be dropped tomorrow. No need to make any changes to the starting line up.
